On Sunday afternoons Grandmother sent her down to the drawing-room to have a “nice talk with Father and Mother”.

Unfortunately, those papers contained an important speech that her father had written. When he discovered what she had done, he was extremely angry. He scolded her harshly and even punished her by hitting her hand with a ruler. Kezia was deeply hurt and frightened. Instead of bringing them closer, her attempt to please him made her even more afraid of him. This incident strengthened her belief that her father was strict and unkind, making her feel more distant from him.
In contrast, Mr. Macdonald, their neighbor, was a completely different kind of father. He was cheerful, kind, and playful with his children. He spent quality time with them, carried them on his back, and laughed with them. His children were not afraid of him but enjoyed his company. Seeing this, Kezia realized that not all fathers are the same—some are strict and distant like her father, while others are affectionate and warm like Mr. Macdonald.
Later, Kezia notices her father’s exhaustion after work and realizes the pressures he faces. When she accidentally ruins his important documents, instead of harsh punishment, he listens to her tearful apology. These experiences help her understand that beneath his strict exterior, he is a weary, loving parent who struggles to express his emotions. Through these moments, Kezia’s fear transforms into empathy, allowing her to see her father as a flawed yet caring human deserving of her sympathy.
